History of Photography

3 Events in photography history that are important to me:

  1. LIFE magazine covers the war with help from Margaret Bourke-White, Robert Capa, Carl Mydans, and W. Eugene Smith. This is important because the war was a very tragic event, these pictures are like records from the war that happened so long ago, covering the suffering and making sure the war efforts are remembered.
  2. First color instant film developed by Polaroid. Polaroid was a camera I used very often after I turned thirteen. It was very important to me and seeing how they made the first color instant film is very cool to know!
  3. Adobe Photoshop 1.0 released. Growing up where photography is more digital, adobe photoshop is a very important tool. I like it, with the wide range of effects I can use for my photography!

Magazine Cover

The magazine cover I made:

My Favorite Magazine Covers + Critique.

I love all of these covers. My favorite is the blue with Zendaya. She’s one of my favorite celebrities and the outfit is amazing, i like the lighting on her face and it’s just very nice to look at. It just draws me in.

All of these covers stood out to me because they chose the most perfect models for them. Their makeup fits the theme of the magazine very well and i like the poses. They look so powerful. I like the expressions on their faces too.

Pop Art/Warhol

My Work:

My pop artist for my critique is Andy Warhol.

1.What is Pop Art?

A photography piece of anything that is popular at the time.

2. Why is this artist’s work considered Pop Art?

He created pop art, his work and designs are very vibrant, and he chose the best subjects that were very trendy and popular.

3.Describe some of this artists work.

His art has very bright colors, almost reminding me of a comic book look. That stood out to me since i love old paper comics. The highlights of his subjects are bright but any shadow is black. Each color contrasts the other which is nice.

4. Why did you pick this artist and why do you like his/her work?

I like his work because it’s very artistic. I see such vibrant colors, and it draws the eyes onto the piece. It’s nice to look at and as I said before it reminds me of old comics.

100 Most Influential Images of All Time

01.

Taken by Richard Drew

  • This picture was taken during the events of 9/11. Richard Drew happened to take a picture of this man falling to his death during the attack. An escape from falling buildings.
  • I chose this picture because it was said the falling man was never identified. It stirred up a sad feeling inside me, knowing this man’s identity will never be found.

02.

Taken by Buzz Aldrin, the 2nd man on the moon of Neil Armstrong

  • This picture was taken of Neil Armstrong, the 1st man on the moon. Everyone on earth was celebrating the successful mission.
  • I like this picture because it was the day everyone realized how big space is. it took them this long to take their first steps on the moon. It was a magical experience for the astronauts. People celebrated; it was a big accomplishment. As someone who loves space, this picture made me happy.

03.

Taken by Harry Benson of the Beatles

  • Harry Benson did not take The Beatles seriously, but he started to see them in a new light. He took this picture the night they found out “I Want to Hold Your Hand” hit No. 1 in the U.S.
  • I like this picture because it shows how musicians can be taken seriously, despite sometimes being seen as childish. It shows that people can grow on you. I love the joy they are experiencing in this picture, that spirit. They started a pillow fight as a result of their energy and happiness. It might be hard to take some people seriously if they act this way the first time you see them, but once they grow on you, the energy is normal and it’s nice to see them enjoy themselves.

National Geographic Magazine Cover Review

My favorite National Geographic magazine covers are #1204, #1261 and#1258.

#1258

  • The reason I love #1658 is because of the lighting and shadow on the woman’s face. I love portrait pictures, and the way the light hits her shows the texture of her face. She is a gorgeous model. I like how the words in the magazine frame her, so your eyes wander to her before reading the text. Her eyes look like a brownish red which is very beautiful, and you can see a small light in them.

#1261

  • My favorite out of all of these! Animal close ups are my favorite. Mostly because you can catch the texture with these close-up shots. I love how the ground blends in with the fur. The photographer also made it so we can see and separate the snow on the polar bear from its fur. I absolutely love the detail!

#1204

  • This one is so amazing to me. It must be hard to get good shots like this without setting up the penguins. Unless someone else did it for them- The photographer caught a nice moment between these penguins. I like the lighting and how the family of penguins is all framed in the cover.

Fill Flash

Fill Flash is a very useful tool in photography. It helps light up the subject, just in case they’re standing with the sun/light source behind them. It makes the point of interest lighter and more vibrant, or you can light up the background too. It fills shadows and lights up the shadows. It is very useful; it is one of my favorite tools currently.

Photograph Your Favorite Teacher

My favorite teacher, Mrs. Makkawi

Mrs. Makkawi was my biology teacher in freshman year and has always been my favorite. She still is now; I go to her class as often as possible to visit. She was a teacher I felt understood me best, as I was always able to talk with her about my problems and she always makes time for everyone. When I didn’t understand something, she would help right away, and she would calm people down if they were stressed or frustrated. She’d try and make her class as easy as possible, letting us use our resources for the test. Everyone left her class with a smile.

She is a very lively and fun teacher, there hasn’t been a single day where she came into class without a smile. I like revisiting her class because it’s fun to talk with her and tell her about my accomplishments!

I really appreciate the time I’ve spent in her class. She really is a hard-working teacher who is passionate about her job. She never judged anyone, and her teaching methods really helped us understand what we were learning, while making it so much fun.
